Tonight the WWE presents yet another PPV, the second and now annual Bragging Rights. The event gets its name from the theme of Smackdown vs Raw matches, headlined by a big seven on seven tag match to decide which brand brings home the trophy, or "bragging rights." Here's the card for the third WWE PPV in just a span of five weeks:
WWE Championship: Randy Orton (c) vs. Wade Barrett w/John Cena
The Nexus storyline continues to dominate Raw, but now with a new twist: John Cena must do everything Barrett says or be "fired," including helping him win the WWE Championship from Randy Orton.
World Heavyweight Championship: Buried Alive Match: Kane (c) vs. Undertaker
For the third straight PPV, the Brothers of Destruction will do battle over Kane's gold. Now that Paul Bearer is i the mix, the storyline has become more of a revenge plot for The Undertaker. The last time we saw a buried alive match in WWE history was quite some time ago, in 2003 if I'm not mistaken. Undertaker will get one last shot at the belt as well as his sweet revenge in this encounter in the making since 1997.
Bragging Rights Tag Team Elimination Match: Team Raw vs Team Smackdown
This fourteen man tag match is the main selling point of tonight's show, though it most likely will not be the main event of the evening. Team Raw, captained by the Miz, consists of John Morrison, R-Truth, Santino Marella, Ezekiel Jackson, CM Punk, and Sheamus. They will take on Team Smackdown, made up of captain Big Show,Kofi Kingston, Rey Mysterio, Edge, Jack Swagger, Alberto Del Rio, and Tyler Reks. The winner will get a cheesy looking trophy and ultimate bragging rights for their brand.
U.S. Champion Daniel Bryan vs Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler
If done right and given a decent amount of time and freedom, this one has the potential to steal the show. These are two solid wrestlers who have never faced off before, so I'm really looking forward to this match. Hopefully there will be a solid finish and the match will be taken seriously.
Unified Divas Championship: Layla (c) vs Natalya
The divas feud between Natalya Neidhart and Laycool continues as Natalya gets another shot at the Unified Divas butterfly belt.
Goldust vs Ted Dibiase
Goldust has a PPV match! In 2010! I don't care how good this match is, I'm just happy that Goldust is finally being rewarded for his longetivity and dedication to the business. He doesn't have many years left in his career, but Dustin Rhodes is far underrated as one of the most entertaining characters in wrestling. He's come a long way from "The Natural," and he deserves the spotlight even if its in a strange storyline feud with Ted Dibiase Jr.
We'll have results for the PPV up after the show wih analysis.
In other news, at last night's UFC 121, former WWE Champion and defending UFC Champion Brock Lesnar lost his title against Cain Velazquez in the opening round of their fight. Brock lost via TKO referee stoppage after Cain whaled on him with punches and Lesnar was unable to recover. WWE Superstar and Legend Undertaker was present at the show with his wife Michelle McCool. He's a big fan of MMA. When interviewed, Taker teased a "personal" issue between him and Brock, leading many to speculate a match between the two in a WWEring someday. We can only fantasize. Nevertheless, Brock must now start from the beginning once again and revisit the drawing board. No doubt Dana White will be missing his cash cow as World Champion.
That's it for now. We'll be back with Bragging Rights results as well as a review of WWE's new video game dropping Tuesday. I have mine on pre order and can't wait. You've been Ringside.
